A clearer view of public records

Drinking Water Quality in Ireland

Drinking water is monitored through public programmes, and the resulting records are published across official datasets. WaterCheck Ireland brings those records together around towns and cities, so you can explore the parameters tested, listed exceedance records and monitoring history for mapped Water Supply Zones.

Search for a settlement to open its published report. Place pages connect Census 2022 Built Up Area boundaries with Uisce Éireann Water Supply Zones and historical monitoring data from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Ireland.

These are historical datasets, not live supply information. For current restrictions, outages or live notices, consult the official Uisce Éireann service.

Understand Your Water

What is a listed exceedance?

A record published in the EPA's separate exceedance dataset. WaterCheck Ireland presents these records as listed and does not infer new exceedances from monitoring results.

What is a Water Supply Zone?

A geographic area used to describe a public water supply. A zone can extend beyond one settlement and a settlement can overlap more than one zone.

How is drinking water monitored?

Samples produce results for monitored parameters. The available place reports organise those historical records by mapped supply zone and year.

Why can monitoring results cover locations outside a settlement?

Monitoring records apply to a Water Supply Zone, while the place mapping uses Built Up Area boundaries. Sampling locations can therefore sit elsewhere in the wider zone. Area overlap describes land area, not population served.

Common questions

Tap water quality FAQ

How can I check tap water quality in my area?

Search for your town or city above. If a report is published, it will show historical monitoring results, listed exceedance records and the Water Supply Zones mapped to that Built Up Area.

Where does WaterCheck Ireland get its data?

Monitoring data comes from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Ireland; Water Supply Zone boundaries come from Uisce Éireann; and settlement boundaries and population context come from Census 2022 Built Up Areas.

What is a Water Supply Zone?

It is a geographic area associated with a public water supply. Zone boundaries and settlement boundaries are different, so one may overlap several of the other.

What does a listed exceedance mean?

It means the record appears in the EPA's separate listed exceedance dataset. WaterCheck Ireland reports that source record without creating its own classification.

Does WaterCheck Ireland show live water safety information?

No. The site presents historical monitoring datasets and is not a live safety, outage or restriction service. Consult Uisce Éireann for current official supply information and notices.
